DESCRIPTION The Jefferson Science Fellows program establishes a new model for engaging the American academic science, technology, and engineering communities in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy. Jefferson Science Fellows will spend one year at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., and may periodically travel to U.S. foreign embassies and/or missions for extended stays. Following their one-year tenure, Fellows will return to their academic careers, but will remain available to the U.S. government as experienced consultants for short-term projects over the following five years. Please refer to the program website (see link below) for further details. FUNDING During their one-year assignments at the State Department, Fellows' salary and benefits will be paid by the academic institutions where they hold their tenured appointments. Fellows will receive a stipend of $50 K (from funding provided by the Department of State, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Carnegie Corporation) to offset the costs of temporary living quarters in the Washington, D.C. area. Travel funds will also be made available to Fellows. ELIGIBILITY AND INSTITUTIONAL RESTRICTIONS Tenured academic scientists, technologists, and engineers from U.S. institutions of higher learning are eligible for selection to be Jefferson Science Fellows. U.S. citizenship is required. Because Duke University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the State Department, we are institutionally allowed to nominate up to two faculty for this award. To be considered for nomination, it is essential that interested faculty first submit application materials for internal review. By the November 26th internal deadline, please email the following materials to Judith Andersson in the Office of Research Support (jfa4@duke.edu, 681-8925): * Curriculum vitae (10-page maximum) * Statements of Qualifications (maximum 2 pages each) * Letter of nomination from the candidate's chair or dean (2-page maximum) Please refer to the program website for details regarding these items (except for the chair or dean's letter, which is requested for Duke's internal review). Prospective candidates should be aware that, if they are chosen as institutional nominees, they will need to have all materials (including 3-5 letters of recommendation) finished and submitted by the January 15th application deadline. You will be informed as soon as possible following the internal deadline of the institution's decision concerning your proposed nomination(s).
