Confusing text
- Be concise and clear. Explain concepts that might be unfamiliar to your potential subjects
- Avoid academic jargon and unnecessary repetition.
Mismatch between your subjects and the style of the consent process
- If you are interviewing CEOs it would be appropriate to be formal. However, in many settings, an informal and conversational presentation would be respectful and appropriate.
Providing information during an oral consent process that people will not remember
- Provide a card with your contact information. People can't be expected to remember strings of numbers and email addresses. Consider how subjects may reach you if email or phone are not options. If you will be in a remote area perhaps the card could include a map to where you are staying. Or perhaps there will be a community member who knows where to reach you.
