Support Opportunity for Addiction Research (SOAR) for New Investigators (R03)

Wed, 11/10/2010 - 11:00
Funding Opportunity RFA-DA-11-010 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) are interested in receiving applications to supplement new investigators who have, or have a commitment of support to conduct research in basic or clinical alcohol or drug abuse research from funding sources other than NIH (e.g. private foundation). In addition, those applicants currently supported to conduct research on psychiatric disorders that are often found to be co-morbid with substance abuse, are also eligible to apply to SOAR for the purpose of adding a substance or alcohol abuse research component to their on-going research. It is hoped that the SOAR program will facilitate ongoing supported substance abuse and co-morbidity research among entry-level new investigators. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to support new investigators on-going basic or clinical alcohol, drug abuse and/or related co-morbidity research. The primary goal of this Support Opportunity for Addiction Research (SOAR) is for new investigators to leverage existing research programs in order to strengthen, possibly expand, and/or further develop alcohol, drug abuse, and co-morbidity research.

The Development Of Frontal Cortex And Limbic System And Their Roles In Drug Abuse (R01)

Wed, 11/10/2010 - 11:00
Funding Opportunity PA-11-027 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by NIDA encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to study the development of the frontal and prefrontal cortices, together with the subcortical areas of the limbic system, that play significant roles in mediating emotional and motivated behavior. This initiative is designed to support the basic neuroscience research into the fundamental mechanisms of development of the frontal and prefrontal cortices, as well as the midbrain and basal forebrain structures that mediate a number of functions related to drug abuse and psychiatric disorders including: the euphoric properties of drugs, actions of psychotherapeutic agents, and memory, cognitive and emotional functions. An additional major goal of this initiative is to understand how exposure to drugs of abuse affects the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying nervous system development of circuits implicated in drug reward and addiction.

Molecular Genetics of Drug Addiction and Related Co-Morbidities (R01)

Tue, 11/09/2010 - 11:00
Funding Opportunity PA-11-026 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This FOA encourages applications for research projects that identify and/or validate chromosomal loci and variations in genes that are associated with vulnerability to addiction and that inform the likelihood of responsiveness to treatment. Applications that propose to examine intermediate phenotypes or endophenotypes to assess the molecular genetics of drug addiction, addiction vulnerability and/or their associated co-morbidities and how they are related to drug addiction are especially encouraged. Also encouraged are genetic as well as computational and large-scale genomic approaches, which may include but are not limited to linkage, linkage disequilibrium, case-control or family-based studies, and integration of data from other databases that may supplement substance abuse genetics and genomics data. Data may be collected from the general population, special populations, recent admixed populations, and/or animal models. Investigators are encouraged to include, as a component of their project and as appropriate, gene x gene interactions, gene x environment interactions, gene x environment x development interactions, pharmacogenetics, and non-human models.

Patient Safety and Medical Liability Reform Planning Projects (R21)

Tue, 11/09/2010 - 11:00
Funding Opportunity PAR-11-023 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. Purpose. This FOA solicits planning grants that would lead to the later implementation of a demonstration project on patient safety and medical liability reform. Specifically, the planning effort must focus on: putting patient safety first and working to reduce preventable injuries; fostering better communication between doctors and their patients; ensuring that patients are compensated in a fair and timely manner for medical injuries, while also reducing the incidence of frivolous lawsuits; and reducing liability premiums. The projects must be designed to optimize promising practices that address both ensuring and improving patient safety, as well as reducing health care costs. The projects must focus on the connections between patient safety and medical liability claims.

Advances in Patient Safety through Simulation Research (R18)

Tue, 11/09/2010 - 11:00
Funding Opportunity PAR-11-024 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. Purpose. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is interested in funding a diverse set of projects that develop, test and evaluate various simulation approaches for the purpose of improving the safe delivery of health care. Simulation in health care predominately is a training technique that exposes individuals and teams to realistic clinical challenges through the use of mannequins, task trainers, virtual reality, standardized patients or other forms, and allows participants to experience in real-time the consequences of their decisions and actions. The principal advantage of simulation is that it provides a safe environment for health care practitioners to acquire valuable experience without putting patients at risk. Simulation also can be used as a test-bed to improve clinical processes and to identify failure modes or other areas of concern in new procedures and technologies that might otherwise be unanticipated and serve as threats to patient safety. Applications that address a variety of simulation techniques, clinical settings, provider groups, priority populations, patient conditions, and threats to safety are welcomed. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the AHRQ Research Demonstration and Dissemination Projects (R18) grant mechanism. The individual researcher, sponsored by his or her organization, will be solely responsible for planning, directing, and executing the proposed project.

Tue, 11/09/2010 - 11:00
Funding Opportunity PAR-11-025 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. Purpose. This FOA supports demonstration grants for the development, implementation and evaluation of models that must focus on: putting patient safety first and working to reduce preventable injuries; fostering better communication between doctors and their patients; ensuring that patients are compensated in a fair and timely manner for medical injuries, while also reducing the incidence of frivolous lawsuits; and reducing liability premiums. The projects must be designed to optimize promising practices that address both ensuring and improving patient safety, as well as reducing health care costs. Infrastructure for Maintaining Primary Care Transformation (IMPaCT) Support for Models of Multi-sector, State-level Excellence (U18)

Mon, 11/08/2010 - 11:00
Funding Opportunity RFA-HS-11-002 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. Purpose. This new FOA is for Research Demonstration and Dissemination Projects to expand current state-level, multi-sector efforts to transform primary care practices and develop sustainable infrastructure for quality improvement in small and medium-sized primary care practices. The goal of the FOA is to foster the advancement and evaluation of leading state-level primary care practice support efforts that may become models for a potential national primary care extension service. Successful applicants must demonstrate existing successful collaborative efforts and significant existing infrastructure and activities. Grant supported efforts are to be directed towards 1) enhancing current efforts and filling identified programmatic gaps and 2) program evaluation and sustainability planning. Additionally, a minimum of 25% of grant funds must be applied to dissemination activities targeted to other states. All applications must include a plan for packaging their efforts, including lessons learned and a plan for sharing their experience with a minimum of three other state-level coalitions. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the AHRQ Cooperative Agreement Research Demonstration and Dissemination Projects (U18) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. AHRQ intends to make three awards totaling up to $1.5 million in 2011. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
